Ambrose L. Schmitt, 87, Jasper

Ambrose SchmittAmbrose L. Schmitt, 87, of Jasper, died Tuesday (June 7) at his home. He was born in Jasper October 27, 1928, to Henry and Catherine (Stratman) Schmitt. He married Sally Sermersheim May 15, 1954, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper.

Ambrose was the owner and operator of the Dubois County Insurance Agency for over 30 years. He was a 1946 graduate of Jasper High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, the Serra Club, VFW Post No. 673, American Legion Post No. 147, and was a recipient of the Brute Award. He was a choir director at Holy Family Church for 30 years and spent a combined 70 years in the St. Joseph and Holy Family choirs. He enjoyed and spending time with his grandchildren and his “granddogs” Scruffles and Blacktop.He loved history, especially reading books about the city of Jasper.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Schmitt; two daughters, Debbie Schmitt, Jasper, and Diane Story and husband John, Fishers; one son, Gerald Schmitt and wife Inthira, Aurora, Illinois; and three grandchildren, Taylor and Laura Story and Amanda Schmitt.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one grandson, grandson, Arthur Michael Schmitt, five sisters, Roberta, Henrietta, and Mary Catherine Schmitt, Theresa Holder, and Anna Horney, and four brothers, Sylvester, Jerome, Henry Jr., and Leo Schmitt.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper and from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Church. Members of Holy Family Parish will pray a rosary at 3:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Church, Gentiva Hospice, or to a favorite charity.
