Cletus Schaefer, 78, Evanston

Cletus SchaeferCletus Schaefer, 78, of Evanston, died Wednesday (June 1) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville. He was born June 5, 1937, in Huntingburg to Edward and Francis (Waninger) Schaefer. He married Doris Woebkenberg May 2, 1959, at St. Joseph’s Church in Dale. She died January 18, 2008.

Cletus was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of St. Boniface Church in Fulda and its Men’s Sodality. He was a former director of St. Joseph’s Mutual Insurance. He served in the National Guard and belonged to the St. Meinrad American Legion.

He is survived by two sons, Kenneth Schaefer and wife Jane, Lamar, and Donald Schaefer and wife Connie, Dale; two daughters, Jill Mehling and husband Tony, Ferdinand and Joy Brock, Evanston; his companion Bronie Leland, Evanston; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Clarence Schaefer and wife Belle, Ft. Branch; and two sisters, Mildred Lindauer and husband Martin, Ft. Branch, and Dorothy Lindauer and husband Wilfred, St. Henry.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Schaefer, and one sister, Helen Harpeneau.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. (CDT) Friday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand and from 8-9 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Church. Online condolences may be shared at Funeral services at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
