Bernadette K. Schneider, 91, Schnellville

BBernadette K. Schneider, 91 of Schnellville, died Sunday (March 13) at the Timbers of Jasper. She was born in Schnellville August 5, 1924, to Andrew and Katherine (Heichelbech) Merkley. She married Orville Schneider May 18, 1943, at Sacred Heart Church. He died August 2, 1972.

Bernadette was an assistant postmaster at the Kyana Post Office and delivered mail for many years. She taught religion and was caretaker and rosary leader at Sacred Heart Church. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and its St. Anne’s Sodality, the Schnellville Community Center, and the Schnellville Conservation Club. She was a recipient of the Evansville Diocese Brute Society award. She enjoyed buying ice cream for the children in her neighborhood and spending time with neighbors, friends, and family.

She is survived by four daughters, Marilyn Hedinger and husband Maurice, Schnellville, Doris Haas, Jasper, Connie E. Thewes and husband Randy, Celestine, and Cathy Tolbert and husband George, Paoli; three sons, Andrew Schneider and wife Kathy, Birdseye, and Tom Schneider and wife Mary, and Kenny Schneider and wife Monica, all of Schnellville; two daughters-in-law, Deb Ernst, Birdseye, and Becky Weisman and husband Bill, Holland; 16 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 23 step-great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; 15 step-great-great-grandchildren; and one brother Albert Merkley, Schnellville.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sons, Gary and Orville, Jr. (Buck) Schneider; two sisters, Frances Schuetter and Rita Sivori, brothers, Arthur, Ralph, Clarence, Gilbert, and Leo and Vic Merkley, and two brothers who died in childhood, Joseph and Andrew Jr.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The Sacred Heart St. Anne’s Society will lead the rosary 1:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be made at Funeral services at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
