Elizabeth C. Schmitt, 96, Ireland

Elizabeth CElizabeth C. Schmitt, 96, of Ireland, died Monday (February 29) at her home. She was born St. Anthony August 15, 1919, to Wendel and Lena (Burke) Wagner. She married Othmar J. Schmitt May 4, 1946, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. He died February 10, 1987.

Elizabeth was a homemaker and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, the St. Anne’s Society, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of the Ireland Sportsman Club. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by four daughters, Mary Jane Schmitt, Pat Durcholz and husband LeRay, and Ann Fleck and husband Glen, all of Ireland, and Virginia Sermersheim and husband Jerry, Jasper; five sons, Tom Schmitt and wife, Judy, Ted Schmitt, Ron Schmitt and wife Bev, Gene Schmitt and wife Martha, and Alan Schmitt, all of Ireland; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; four step great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Gruenke.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Cora Ann Fleck, one great-grandson, Carter Joseph Schmitt, one step granddaughter, Shannon Sermersheim, one sister, Agnes Schmitt, and six brothers, Tony, Alois, Richard, Joe, and Maurice Wagner, and one who died in infancy.

Friends may call from noon-7 p.m. Friday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The St. Anne’s Society will pray a rosary at 11:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
