Mary Lou Schmitt2Mary Lou Schmitt, 82, of Ireland, died Monday (February 15) at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. She was born in Jasper October 30, 1933, to John and Lucille (Schuetter) Schulte. She married Frank E. Schmitt February 18, 1954, in Kundek Hall of St. Joseph’s School in Jasper.

Mary Lou worked for 24 years as one of the first secretaries for Alvin Ruxer at Jasper Engine Exchange. After a brief time away to start a family, she worked for Uebelhor and Sons for five years. She then worked for over 40 years as a secretary/bookkeeper for Mrs. Ruxer and Bob Ruxer at Ruxer Horse Farms. She was a member of the Jasper High School class of 1951, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, the St. Ann’s Society, and the Jasper Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed doing word search puzzles, going on walks, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Schmitt; three sons, Dean Schmitt and wife Jill, Jasper, and Wayne Schmitt and wife Geri, and Greg Schmitt and wife Kathy, all of Ireland; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Ackerman and husband, Vince, Jasper; one brother, Charles Schulte and wife Clara Mae, Jasper; two step-sisters, Marlene Schmitt and husband Gary, Ireland, and Carol “Susie” Sander, Jasper; and one sister-in-law, Mary Catherine Schulte, Jasper.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernie and John Schulte, one step-sister, Diane Phillips, and two in-laws, Phyllis Schulte and Dave Phillips.

Friends may call from 1-2 p.m.Thursday at St. Mary’s Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be made at Funeral services a p.m. Thursday (the 62nd wedding anniversary of Frank and Mary Lou) at St. Mary’s Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
