Haysville (NNDC) – An arrest has been made in connection with that abandoned SUV found down an embankment north of Haysville Sunday afternoon.

Indiana State Police say 35-year old David Siguenza Contreras faces charges, including a felony, after he abandoned an SUV after crashing it along U. S. 231 early Sunday morning just north of Haysville in Martin County.

ISP says Contreras was driving the SUV that actually belongs to a female acquaintance of his. Both live at the same rural Jasper address.

ISP says at about 4:30 Sunday morning, Contreras was driving north when the SUV left the right side of the highway, traveling about 100 yards before coming to rest at the bottom of a steep embankment. The SUV struck two trees and utility pole before coming to rest.

ISP says efforts were made to scratch off the VIN and other identifying numbers from the vehicle, including a door plate that was not successfully removed.  The SUV’s license plate was also missing when police found it at about 2:30 Sunday afternoon.

In fact, the female owner of the SUV saw video of the accident on NewsNow Dubois County and contacted ISP at Jasper to tell them the vehicle belonged to her. That led police to Contreras who, according to ISP, admitted he was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Contreras is charged with a Level 5 felony of Removing a Vehicle Identification Number along with misdemeanor counts of Operating a Vehicle Having Never Been Licensed and Leaving the Scene of a Property Vehicle Accident.

He is currently being held in the Martin County Jail at Shoals.
