Jasper (NNDC) – Both state and local health officials tell News Now Dubois County that as of 4:20 p.m. local time, the only confirmed outbreak of avian flu in production turkey farms in Dubois County is the Steve and Dan Kalb farm northwest of Dubois.

An official with the Indiana State Board of  Animal Health says preliminary testing done by othet local turkey farmers and state testing crews in Dubois County have shown possible strains of “bird flu” viruses.

Tammy Humbert with the Dubois County Emergency Management Agency says these test samples are on their way to Purdue University for further testing.

Humbert says it will be at least 24 hours before the results are confirmed as positive or negative for not only the Avian virus, like the one found at the Kalb farm, but also any number of viruses known to affect poultry.

The test samples are from farms  that currently have  somewhere between 140,000 and 150,00  production turkeys. These farms are in Dubois County.

A state official says if these test samples are positive, the total estimated number of infected turkeys (approximately 200, 000 including the Kalb farm) would be still be a “very very small” number of the total production turkeys in Dubois County.

State health officials earlier said the poultry and eggs from these affected birds does not pose any kind of major health risk to humans.

It is state policy that affected flocks be euthanized, as is the case right now at the Kalb farm, to ensure the overall health of the flock.

One state official says it is very rare that a human contracts these type of bird like blues and viruses.
