One Injured In Scooter/Car Accident; Huntingburg Man Awakens To House Filled With Smoke (BLOTTER)

One Injured In Monday Accident In Jasper

JASPER (NNDC) – A Vincennes man was injured in a two-vehicle accident Monday morning on Jasper’s southside.

Jasper police say 26-year old Curtis Burton of Vincennes was traveling east on his scooter in the 700 block of east 164 at about 5:40AM when he failed to see a car that had pulled onto the highway.

Burton was transported to Jasper’s Memorial Hospital with neck and head pain. The driver of the second vehicle, 26-year old Joshua Creutz of Jasper was not hurt.

Burton was cited for Failure To Yield.

Man Asleep In His Recliner Awakens To Smoke In House

Huntingburg (NNDC) – A local man who was sleeping in a recliner in the living room of his home awoke early Sunday morning to a house full of smoke.

Huntingburg fire officials say Don Marchino awoke to the smoke at about 5:30AM Sunday.

Huntingburg Fire Chief Scott Patberg says Marchino was “very fortunate” to have awakened when he did as there were no working smoke detectors found in the home in the 1300 block of Jacob Court.

Marchino told HFD he found smoke coming from a bag of trash inside a a bedroom on the opposite side of the house where he was sleeping.

Patberg says the bag contained cigarette butts and a smoldering discarded cigarette is believed to be the cause of the smoke.

Marchino was able to remain in the house.
