Five Charged Following New Year’s Day Morning Altercation; Two With Felonies

JASPER (NNDC) – Five people were charged following a domestic dispute that became physical early Friday (New Year’s Day) morning.

Jasper police say 21-year old Daustin Stafford and 20-year old Cayla Clayton are now charged with Level 5 felony counts of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor after police say they allegedly provided alcohol to a juvenile at their apartment home in the 1400 block of Jackson Street.

JPD says the incident started when Clayton and Stafford got into a physical altercation. JPD says the couple’s two small children were present at the time.

Stafford and Clayton are also charged with Level 6 felony counts of Neglect of a Dependent and Maintaining a Common Nuisance.

JPD says when officers arrived at the apartment at about 2:30AM, two others, 20-year old Logan Ruckriegel of rural Jasper and 18-year old Zachery Uppencamp of Sellersburg attempted to flee the apartment out a back window.  Police say a female juvenile was found hiding in a bedroom of the apartment along with Clayton.

JPD says eventually, all five adults in the apartment at the time were involved in the altercation.

JPD says the juvenile has been charged with misdemeanor counts of Visiting a Common Nuisance and Minor Consuming.  She was transported to the Knox County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Meanwhile, Clayton has also been charged with a misdemeanor count of Minor Consuming.

Ruckriegel and Uppencamp were charged with misdemeanor counts of Visiting a Common Nuisance and Minor Consuming.

JPD says Stafford and Clayton’s two minor children were taken by local child protective services staff and are staying with a relative as police say their investigation into the incident continues.
