Huntingburg Waste Water Rate Hike Approved (AUDIO)

HUNTINGBURG (NNDC) – Huntingburg’s wastewater (sewer) rates are going up by 18% New Year’s day!

The city’s council gave its final approval to the rate hike Tuesday evening.

Before voting on the rate hike, a public hearing was held, and only one concerned citizen voiced opposition to the rate hike.

Mayor Denny Spinner says the city’s sewer system and its overall ability to meet the needs of a growing community are the main reasons for the rate increase even before the announcement of the St. Joseph’s senior housing apartments and the new Hunter’s Crossing subdivision were approved earlier this summer…

Wastewater rates in Huntingburg have not increased since January 1, 2011. 11.7% the rate increase will be used to shore up an annual deficit in the wastewater department’s operating costs in recent years, and the rest (6.3%) will be used expanding the city’s wastewater capacity.
