JASPER (NNDC) – A local man has been charged with felony strangulation and confinement charges after a state police investigation into an alleged battery incident in June.

Indiana State Police say a woman came forward on September 1st and claimed that 25-year old Thomas Gootee of Portersville had battered her in the early morning hours of June 21st.

ISP says the woman told them details of a physical assault that allegedly occurred after she tried to leave Gootee’s residence at the time in Jasper.  He has since moved to the Portersville area.  The woman told ISP the alleged assault resulted in injuries and she provided police pictures of the injuries.

ISP’s investigation resulted in Gootee’s arrest Monday night.  He’s charged with a Level 5 felony count of criminal confinement as well as a Level 6 felony count of strangulation.  ISP says Gootee also faces Class A misdemeanor counts of battery resulting in bodily injury, intimidation and criminal mischief.

He is free after posting a $10,000 cash bond.

The woman told police Gootee choked her.  She also told police Gootee took her cellphone and smashed it with a hammer.
ISP says Gootee has admitted causing the injuries to the woman and smashing her phone.  The woman told police she was scared of Gootee which was the reason she waited so long to report the incident.
