Mabell C. Schitter, 88, Jasper

Mabelle SchitterMabell C. Schitter, 88, of Jasper, died Saturday (December 5) at Brookside Village in Jasper. She was born in Haysville May 31, 1927, to John and Mattie (Opel) Dorsam. She married Aloysius H. “Butts” Schitter June 15, 1948. He died March 10, 1982.

Mabell was a graduate of Dubois High School. She was a homemaker and worked as a housekeeper supervisor for the Holiday Inn and Best Western Hotels. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, the Oblates of St. Benedict, the Jasper Moose, American Legion Post No. 147 Auxiliary, and Red Hat Society. She was a past president and member of the Jasper Daughters of Isabell #140, St. Ann’s Society, Grandmother’s Club, Bainbridge Extension Homemakers, the Jasper VFW Post No. 673 Auxiliary, and the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she was a past board member. She volunteered at Memorial Hospital, Northwood Good Samaritan Health Center, where she assisted with Mass and bingo, the American Red Cross, St. Joseph’s Church, where she visited the homebound and assisted with the distribution of Communion, and the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization (IOPO). She received the Brute Award in 2002 and received the Martin H. Miller Sr. Volunteer of the Year Award in 2003 from Generations. She enjoyed volunteering, playing cards, bingo, bowling, going to the casino, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Schneider and husband, Allen, Jasper, and Patty Scherle and husband Duane, Jasper; four sons, Ambrose “Butch” Schitter, Michael Schitter and wife Debora, and Ron Schitter and wife, Sharlene, all of Jasper, and John Schitter and wife Rose, Haysville; one son-in-law, Richard “Dick” Clark, Jasper; 14 grandchildren; one step-grandson; 19 great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and two step great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret “Magy” Clark and Cindy Jane Schitter, one great-grandson, Michael Dylan Schitter, and four siblings who died in infancy.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The Jasper D of I and St. Ann’s Society will pray a rosary at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center, or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be made at www.becherkluesner.com.
