Two Suffer Minor Injuries In 3-Vehicle Accident; Texas Man Facing Several Charges Including OWI (BLOTTER)

JASPER (NNDC) – Two drivers suffered minor injuries when three SUVs collided in Jasper Sunday.

Jasper City police report that at 2:18 p.m. William R. Morris, 84, of Huntingburg, was driving south on U.S. highway 231 approaching a red traffic light at 2nd Street. A second vehicle, driven by Josephine C. Vaal, 78, of Mariah Hill, pulled into the intersection eastbound from the Southgate Shopping Center. A third vehicle, driven by Jacy A. Nicholson, 28, of Jasper, was stopped at the traffic light waiting to turn west into the shopping center. Morris stated he did not see the traffic light was red until it was too late for him to stop. As he entered the intersection his SUV struck the SUV driven by Vaal and then veered into the center lane and struck Nicholson’s SUV.

Texas Man Arrested For OWI; Speeding & Improper Passing

HUNTINGBURG (NNDC) – A Texas man is facing several local charges after he was arrested Saturday evening in Huntingburg.

Huntingburg police say 49-year old Mark Benedict (no hometown given) was spotted by police driving nearly 90 miles an hour in 40-mile an hour zone at about 10:40PM Saturday along U. S. 231 at the intersection with 17th Street.

HPD says officers then began pursuit of the vehicle which was heading south through the city.

During the pursuit, the SUV was observed by police to have illegally passed three vehicles along Main Street (U. S. 231) near 6th.

Police finally stopped the vehicle south of Southridge High School near in the intersection with West 750 South.

Police say the driver (Benedict) failed field sobriety tests and his blood alcohol content tested . 11% on a field breathalyzer. Police also say a chemical test done later resulted in a .12% BAC.

Benedict is charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated along with citations for Speeding and Improper Passing.

No One Hurt In Two-Vehicle Accident Friday Evening

JASPER (NNDC) – No one was hurt in a two-vehicle accident in Jasper early Friday evening.

Jasper police say a car driven by 29-year old Christopher Johannes of Santa Claus was heading Northbound on U. S. 231 at about 6:10PM Friday approaching the intersection with 34th Street when an SUV in front of his car began to slow.

The driver of the SUV, 50-year old Darin Kemp of Huntingburg, told JPD he was slowing for backed-up traffic from the intersection with 36th Street.

Johannes told JPD he was not able to slow down in time to avoid colliding into the rear of Kemp’s vehicle.

JPD says Johannes’ vehicle was a total loss while Kemp’s vehicle sustained about $8000 in estimated damages.
