Jasper Lions Schedule 65th Celebration

Jasper LionsJASPER (From Sources) – The Jasper Lions Club has scheduled its 65th Anniversary Celebration Wednesday, beginning at noon at the Jasper VFW.

The Jasper Club was chartered on November 30, 1950, by Lions International and was sponsored by the Loogootee Lions Club. Forty-six energetic young men comprised the roster. Local attorney Clem Nordhoff was the club’s first president. The charter night banquet was held at the Rustic Tavern. Welcoming remarks were made by Mayor Herbert Thyen.

Today, the Jasper Lions’ roster consists of more than 60 men and women working together to fulfill the club goals and to help make Jasper a better place to live. Since inception, the club has dedicated itself to the service of the blind and visually impaired. It provides eye examinations and glasses for residents of Dubois County in need of financial assistance. It provides many reading machines for those who are sight impaired. Thousands of pairs of used eyeglasses from Dubois County are collected, recycled and distributed to individuals in third world countries. In addition, the handicapped river park by the Jasper Mill was paid for by the club.

The club provides financial support to many civic projects in Jasper and Dubois County such as Mentors for Youth, Junior Achievement, the PTO Post Prom Party, Little League baseball, Jasper Youth Soccer, Special Olympics, Food Bank, Boys and Girls State delegates, large print and audio books for the Jasper Library, and many others.
