Herbert J. Freson, 97, Huntingburg

Herb FresonHerbert J. Freson, 97, of Huntingburg, died Wednesday (November 4) at his home. He was born in Huntingburg March 18, 1918, to John and Anna (Engert) Freson. He married Anna Marie Rohlman May 14, 1946 in Jasper. She died July 2, 1962. He married his second wife, Rosemary Chappell, November 30, 1974, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg. She died April 1, 2015.

Herbert was a furniture craftsman for Dolly Madison Industries, the company from which he retired. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and V.F.W. Post No. 2366. He enjoyed woodworking and wine making and was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, stationed in Italy during World War II.

He is survived by one daughter, Dodie Uhl and husband Steve, Jasper; one son, Jim Freson and wife Sue, Newburgh; four stepdaughters, Vicky Wagner and husband Steve, Huntingburg, Pat Gehlhausen and husband Dan, Celestine, Barb Hall and husband Tom, Holland, and Deanna Schmett and husband Brad, La Quinta, California; one stepson, Robert Lange, Jasper; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and two wives, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Fritz, Charlie, Hugo, and Bob Freson, two sisters, Mamie Mehringer and Rose Fowler; and one step grandson.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. (EST) Friday at Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg. A parish vigil prayer service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary’s Church. Condolences may be shared with the family online at www.nassandson.com. A funeral mass at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with burial following in the church cemetery. VFW Post No. 2366 memorial detail will conduct military graveside rites.
