Investigation Into Friday’s Accident Along Indiana 162 Continues (with VIDEO)

JASPER (NNDC) – The investigation into this past Friday’s head-on accident along Indiana 162 just south of Jasper continues.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says the driver of a northbound SUV, 26-year old Kaleb Opel of Birdseye, fell asleep.  His vehicle then went about eight feet left of center where it struck a southbound extended cab pickup truck driven by 36-year old Clint Burger of Jasper.

DCSD says Opel’s vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane the force of the impact sent Burger’s vehicle went off the westside of the highway and down an embankment where the truck overturned coming to rest on its top.  The pickup was pulling an 18-foot utility trailer with materials on it.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and both got out of their vehicles under their own power before first-responders arrived on scene.  The accident happened at about 3:30PM Friday.

DCSD says Indiana 162 was closed for about 35 about a half-mile south of Schnellville Road while the accident scene was cleared.
