Northeast Schools Budget Woes Could Force Closing Of An Elementary School (VIDEO)

DUBOIS (NNDC) – Changes in recent year’s with the state’s school funding formula, caps on property taxes, and a slowly declining enrollment, has the Northeast Dubois School Corporation forced to deal with a $300,000 budget shortfall for the 2015-16 school year.  And the corporation is preparing more budget shortfalls in the near future.

Corporation officials say they have already made what they call “painless” saving measures for the current budget, but it’s not enough.  That has prompted school officials to go to the public for ideas and suggestions to get the district out of the red.  One idea is to close one of the corporation’s two elementary schools; more than likely Celestine.

But that idea is strongly opposed by those who have attended two public forums on the corporation’s budget woes.  One was last week in Celestine, the other was Tuesday night in Dubois…
