Ernest B. “Ernie” Knust, 91, Ferdinand

Ernest KnustErnest B. “Ernie” Knust, 91, of Ferdinand, died Thursday (October 8) at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. He was born in Ferdinand February 1, 1924, to John and Catherine (Burke) Knust. He married Catherine Jahn May 4, 1954, at St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Ernest was a dairy farmer and was retired from the Dubois County Highway Department after 23 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army in Northern France and the Philippines. He was a member of the Ferdinand American Legion Post 124, St. Ferdinand Parish and its St. Joseph’s Sodality, and Ferdinand Senior Citizens. He served for 45 years on the Ferdinand Township Advisory Board, and enjoyed playing Sheepshead, word search puzzles, and spending time with family and friends.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Catherine; four sons, David Knust, Kenny Knust, and John Knust and wife Marcy, all of Ferdinand, and Gary Knust and wife Rhonda, St. Anthony; one daughter, Diane Heilers and husband Fred, Ferdinand; seven grandchildren, Phillip J. and Jenna Heilers, Mandy Schaeffer, and Amber Lee, Kelli, Lisa, and Kayla Knust; three brothers, Reynold “Lenny” Knust and wife Leona, and Clarence Knust all of Ferdinand, and Joe Knust and wife Charlotte, Jasper; and one sister, Mary Krassick of Columbus.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Rita Begle.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday and from 7-9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Online condolences may be shared at Funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Henry Church with burial following in St. Ferdinand Church Cemetery. Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 will conduct military graveside rights.
