JASPER (NNDC) – After a more than three year wait, Kelly Craig Schaefer and her husband Shawn are now parents.

The now 35-year-old former IU and Jasper High School cheerleader survived a horrific accident near Durango, Colorado back in 1999 that left her a quadriplegic.

Kelly is a fifth-grade teacher in Jasper and now she and Shawn, also a teacher, are mama and papa to two three-year-olds, Sam and Emmy, who arrived August 18th from Africa.

“It’s pretty crazy,” Kelly told the Belleville (IL) News-Democrat IN Shawn’s hometown. They married on September 6, 2009.

Earlier this year, Kelly with the help of her aunt Michelle Weidenbenner, released her memoir of the accident and her life since titled, “Fractured; Not Broken.”

Kelly says writing the book was “a blessing” as it distracted her and Shawn from what she describes as a very difficult adoption process.

Kelly and Shawn are enjoying their first weeks as parents.

Kelly says, We think we’re doing a good job at it. It’s trying, crazy and wonderful at the same time.”
