Jasper Accident Injures Two Youngsters; HPD Looking For Car That Left Scene Of Accident (BLOTTER)

TWO KIDS INJURED IN TWO-VEHICLE ACCIDENT

JASPER (NNDC) – Wet pavement and speed were factors in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon in Jasper injured two children who were passengers in one of the vehicles involved.

Jasper police say a van driven by 62-year old Barbara Leonard of Jasper was struck by a pickup truck driven by 63-year old Mary Steinmetz of Ferdinand.  The accident happened at about 3:40PM at the intersection of 9th and Newton streets.

JPD says Steinmetz’s pickup was southbound on Newton Street.  She told officers she was not able to stop in time for a red light at the intersection because of the wet pavement and collided with the van.

JPD says the van was eastbound on 9th and was attempting to turn north onto Newton.

Two grandchildren in Leonard’s van, seven-year old Leah Leonard and nine-year old Emma Leonard suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident.  Both were taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Steinmetz was cited for speed too fast to avoid a collision.
