Leo J. Balbach, 87, Mariah Hill

Leo BalbachLeo J. Balbach, 87, of Mariah Hill, died Friday (September 25) at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper. He was born in Mariah Hill March 17, 1928, to Anton and Bertha (Jochim) Balbach. He married Gladys Reckelhoff June 6, 1953, at St.Ferdinand Church. She died March 3, 2002.

Leo was a retired dairy farmer. He served two years in the U.S Army and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was a member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 124, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Mary Help of Christians Church in Mariah Hill. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts. He enjoyed gardening and wine making.

He is survived by two sons, Ray Balbach and wife Lori, and Ed Balbach and wife Donna, all of Mariah Hill; three daughters, Sharon Klueh and husband Mark, Jasper, and Mary Weyer and husband Larry, and Jeanne Schaeffer and husband David, all of Ferdinand; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grand-children.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert and William Balbach.

Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. (CDT) Sunday and from 10-11 a.m. Monday at Mary Help of Christians Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Mary Help of Christians Church. Funeral services at 10 a.m. Monday at Mary Help of Christians Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 will provide military graveside rites.
