Lee E. Broeker, 90, Huntingburg

BroekerLee E. Broeker, 90, of Huntingburg, died Thursday (September 24) at his home. He was born in Holland December 4, 1924, to William and Selma (Schoppenhorst) Broeker. He married Emadean L. Schmeltekope November 15, 1943, at Salem United Church of Christ in Huntingburg. She died December 31, 2007.

Lee worked as a shop foreman at Jasper Corporation, where he retired. He was a member of Salem Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, V.F.W. Post No. 2366, Holland American Legion, and the Southern Indiana Leathernecks. He served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, participating in battles at Guam, the Marianas Islands, and Iwo Jima.

He is survived by one daughter, Starr Lee Kieffner, Haysville; one son, Raven Lee Broeker, Greensboro, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Amanda Kluemper, Jasper, and Levi Broeker and Lindsay Nuckles, North Carolina; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg and from 3-4 p.m. Sunday at Salem United Church of Christ. A vigil service, conducted by members of the Southern Indiana Leathernecks Detachment of the Marine Corps League, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Condolences may be shared online at www.nassandson.com. Funeral services at 10 a.m. (EDT) Monday at Salem Christ with burial following in Fairmount Cemetery. Rev. Mark West will officiate. Military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post 2366 memorial detail.
