McAree; Lorey Lead UIndy Greyhounds To Season-Opening Win

BLACKLICK, Ohio (University of Indianapolis) – For the second straight year, the UIndy men’s golf team (293-291) opened its season with a win at the Ohio Dominican Kickoff Classic, held at Jefferson Country Club in Blacklick, Ohio Monday.

Sophomore Graham McAree topped the individual leaderboard with an impressive two-round score of -6.

McAree (71-67) took medalist honors for just the second time his still-young career. The Fishers, Ind., native started the day with a one-under 71 before setting a new career low with a blistering five-under 67.

Two other Greyhounds finished in the top five at the 36-hole event. Junior Andrew VanAelst (75-73) and freshman Reid Lorey each carded a four-over 148 to share fifth place in the 61-man field, with Lorey’s lofty finish coming in his very first collegiate event. ¬†Lorey is from Jasper.

Another freshman, Christopher Heck (74-76), was also in the UIndy lineup. The Greenwood, Indiana product had a solid tournament, finishing at +6 to take 16th. Sophomore Brady Sappenfield (80-80) rounded out the team scores by placing 39th.

Zach Gurtner (71-78) topped UIndy’s three individual competitors. The sophomore was tied for the lead after 18 holes before settling in a six-way tie for 10th. Senior Jon Williams (79-75) shared 25th place while junior Trae Cole (76-79) tied for 28th.

The Greyhounds next hit the links when they host the always-tough Brickyard Invitational at the Brickyard Golf Course in Speedway, Ind., Sept. 21-22.
