Four Escape Serious Injury In Saturday Night Head-On Collision; One Injured In Jasper Accident (BLOTTER)

Schnellville Man Facing Charges After Head-On Collision Saturday Night

KYANA (NNDC) – A Schnellville man is facing several charges after his car collided head-on with a second vehicle late Saturday night along East 400 South north of Kyana.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says 44-year old Matthew Welp was eastbound on East 400 South shortly after 8:30PM when his car went left of center as it crested a hill near South 600 East and struck a second car head-on. The second car was driven by 18-year old Payton Begle, 18 of Ferdinand.

DCSD says Welp had to be extricated from his vehicle. DCSD also says Welp was belligerent with first responders as they tried to help him and he also pushed a deputy while being helped from the vehicle.

Welp was taken to Memorial Hospital in Jasper for treatment of possible broken ribs and a laceration to his left arm.

Begle and two other teens in her car refused medical treatment though all three complained of pain. DCSD says Begle was later taken to Memorial Hospital by her parents.

Meanwhile, Welp is charged with operating while intoxicated with a prior conviction, battery on a law enforcement officer and he was cited for driving left of center.

DCSD says Welp’s blood alcohol content was .27%.

CANNELTON WOMAN ARRESTED FOR DRIVING WHILE SUSPENDED

JASPER (NNDC) – A 35-year old Cannelton woman was arrested by Jasper police early Monday evening.

Jasper police say Jennifer Dawson was stopped by police on U. S. 231 (Newton Street) at Baden Strasse at about 6:20PM for failure to yield the right of way to other traffic at the intersection.

JPD says officers discovered that Dawson was driving with a suspended license and she also had a prior conviction for the same offense.

ONE INJURED IN ACCIDENT ON JASPER’S WESTSIDE

JASPER (NNDC) – One of the drivers involved in a two-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon in Jasper was taken to Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Jasper police say 16-year old Hunter McCune of Jasper complained of head, arm and knee pain after his moped collided into the rear of a car that had stopped along South St. Charles Street.

JPD says 75-year old Janice Schnarr stopped her car for another vehicle that was backing out of a driveway in the 300 block of St. Charles shortly before 4:00PM. JPD says McCune was not able to stop his moped in time before colliding with Scharr’s car. Both vehicles were southbound on St. Charles.

McCune was taken to hospital by his parents.

CRAWFORD COUNTY MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING SATURDAY NIGHT ACCIDENT EAST OF CELESTINE

CELESTINE (NNDC) – 36-year old Charles Allen of English was arrested after his car crashed along Indiana 164 east of Celestine late Saturday night.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says Allen was driving east on 164 when he lost control of his vehicle and went off the southside of the highway at about 11:40PM. The vehicle ended up in a ditch. He car was a total loss.

Allen told DCSD deputies that he drank approximately eight small bottles of straight vodka at a party. He agreed to field sobriety tests as well as a certified test later at Jasper police headquarters. The certified test showed Allen’s blood alcohol content to be .20%.

He was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated. DCSD says Allen has a prior conviction of the same offense. He was taken into custody without incident.
