JASPER (NNDC) – A 44-year old Grand Rapids, Michigan man is now in custody for allegedly trying to solicit who he thought was a 14-year old girl for various sexual acts.

Jasper police say Michael Paul Van Houten now faces a Level 5 felony count of Child Solicitation following a five-month JPD investigation.

In a news release, JPD says Van Houten was having online “chats” with a girl he thought was 14 years old and a student at Jasper Middle School.  JPD says during those chats, Van Houten solicited the girl for various sex acts and even made plans to meet the girl on two different occasions.  Police say those plans were never followed through.

Earlier today, JPD enlisted the help of police in Grand Rapids who arrested Van Houten at his place of business there.   Van Houten is being held in the Kent County Jail in Grand Rapids awaiting extradition to Jasper where he will be formally arraigned on the child solicitation charge.
