Raymond J. Werner, 82, Jasper

Raymond WernerRaymond J. Werner, 82, of Jasper, died Wednesday (August 19) at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born in Jasper April 27, 1933, to Robert and Edna (Breitweiser) Werner. He married Leona Blessinger October 20, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper.

Ray was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1954 to 1956. He worked as an underground coal miner for 40 years and retired from R & H Mining. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland. His hobbies included hunting and collecting antique tractors.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Werner; two daughters, Karen Healy and husband Dan, Jasper, and Donna Jones and husband, Forrest “Kip,” Velpen; two sons, Steve Werner and wife Margie, and Larry Werner and wife, LaDonna, all of Jasper; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Norma Kimmerle and husband John, Betty Keeler, Margie Werner, and Marilyn Shipley and husband Jim, all of Columbus, Ohio; five brothers, Donald Werner and wife Beverly, Eugene Werner and wife Jane, Tom Werner and wife Mary Jane, all of Jasper, and Leo Werner and wife Ginger, and Jerry Werner, all of Columbus, Ohio.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church or to a favorite charity. Online condolences may be made at www.becherkluesner.com. Funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Church with burial following in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. VFW Post No. 673 will conduct military gravesite rites.
