Harold Louis “Chalkie” Ermert, 86, Huntingburg

ChalkieHarold Louis “Chalkie” Ermert, 86, of Huntingburg, died Saturday (August 15) at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. He was born in Duff to Edward and Carrie (Caldemeyer) Ermert. He married Mary Ella Evrard April 18, 1950, n Dale.

Chalkie was owner of Mary’s Furniture and co-owner of Lincoln Trails Furniture. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, V.F.W. Post No. 2366, and the American Legion. He enjoyed camping and was an avid collector. He served as a sergeant in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Alla Ermert; one son, Joe Ermert and wife Janis, Indianapolis; two daughters, Janice Kays, Huntingburg, and Camille Fay Neeley and husband Tom, Newburgh; five grandchildren, Alex, Amber, April, Brianne, and Elizabeth; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Marie Rauscher, Carrie Rauscher, Selma Snyder, and Mabel Springston; and two brothers, Henry and Elmer Ermert.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg. Condolences may be shared online at www.nassandson.com. Funeral services at 10 a.m. (EDT) Wednesday at the funeral home with military rites conducted by VFW Post No. 2366. Interment of his cremains will take place at Mayo Cemetery near Duff. Rev. Mark West will officiate at the service.
