Larry Schaefer[1]Larry R. Schaefer, 68, of Ferdinand, died Friday (August 14) at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born in St. Meinrad to Othmar & Perline (Ernst) Schaefer. His first wife Diana (Scott) Peters died May 31, 2005. He married Cindy Gehlhausen – Schipp April 12, 2008.

Larry retired in 2012 from Kimball International after 48 years. After retirement he worked part-time at Holiday World. He enjoyed traveling, playing euchre and cinch, spending time with family and friends, and special times with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Jasper Moose Lodge, Jasper Recreation Club, and the Jasper Gun Club. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard and was a member of Ferdinand American Legion Post 12.

Surviving are his wife, Cindy Schipp- Schaefer; one daughter, Kelli Lehmkuhler and husband John, St. Anthony; one son, Curt Schaefer and wife Jamie, Jasper; four step-sons, Chris Peters and wife Thess, Jasper, Tom Peters and wife Laura, Ireland, Aaron Schipp and wife Amanda, Greenwood, and Adam Schipp and wife Emily, Ferdinand; one step-daughter, Amber Wehr and husband Mike, Sharpsburg, Georgia; 17 grandchildren; five sisters, Marilyn Haefling and husband Ed, Evanston, Pat Hochgesang and husband Mike, and Brenda Stallings and fiancé Curt Trainer, all of Jasper, Shirley Haug and husband Steve, Ferdinand, and Donna Klein and husband Kim, St. Croix.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death three brothers, Kenneth, Otsie, Jr., and infant David Schaefer, and two sisters, Debra and Chrissy Schaefer.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Monday and 7-9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand. Ferdinand American Legion Post 124 will have military services Monday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society (Pancreatic Cancer Research). Online condolences may be made at Funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, with burial following in Enlow Cemetery in Jasper.
