HUNTINGBURG (NNDC) – Joe Haywood is an Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation officer. While driving through Huntingburg Thursday afternoon, he noticed a man in what Haywood described as “ratty clothes” trying to get a ride.

Haywood was on his way home to Jasper but decided to turn around…

Haywood says on the way to Princeton the two of them talked. Haywood learned the man’s name is Mike. Joe says he believes Mike is from the Indianapolis area. Haywood says it was apparent he was homeless and drifting from town to town.

Haywood asked Mike if had any money. Mike told him all he had was $20 on him. Haywood said, “So I stopped by an ATM and gave him $100.

Haywood says Mike counted the money, and then gave Joe back $80.

Mike told Haywood how thankful he was for the money. Mike said the extra $20 would get him by for a while

Haywood posted on the IDNR District 7 Facebook page his ride with Mike. Haywood says he didn’t post the story for any personal recognition.

Haywood says he posted the story for the lesson Mike taught him about generosity…

On the Facebook page, Haywood thanks Mike for the humbling experience and wishes him best of luck in his ongoing journey.

Haywood goes on to say, “It is a great honor to serve in the role of a public servant and have the opportunity to meet this man.”
