Elvera M. Gress, 100, Jasper

Elvera GressElvera M. Gress, 100, of Jasper, died Saturday (August 1) at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. She was born in St. Henry December 22, 1914, to John and Frederica (Weyer) Fleck. She married Edgar Gress July 23, 1934, in Evansville. He died June 11, 1989.

Elvera retired as the vice-president of customer service for Dubois County Bank .She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper and its St. Ann’s Society, and a 1932 graduate of Jasper High School. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, working crossword puzzles, and playing cards. She was a fan of Indiana University basketball, the Indiana Pacers, and the Cincinnati Reds.

She is survived by one son, William Gress and wife Robin, Bloomington; one sister, Anne Amelia Born, Indianapolis; her niece and caretaker, Ruth Ann Guthery, Jasper; and a number of nieces and nephews, including John Hoffman and wife JoRean, Jasper.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Laura Rasche, Theresa Hoffman, Lenora Horstmeyer. and Marie Fleck, and four brothers, Raymond, Clarence, and Dennis Fleck, and infant Joseph Fleck.

Friends may call from 9-11 Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Church in Jasper. Services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with entombment following in Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum.
