Virginia M. “Ginny” Mendel, 73, Jasper

Virginia MendelVirginia M. “Ginny” Mendel, 73, of Jasper, died Saturday (July 18) at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. She was born in Jasper July 30, 1941, to Leo Sr. and Catherine (Heichelbech) Giesler. She married Thomas L. Mendel May 3, 1962, at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church.

Virginia managed the Heritage Inn and Split Rail restaurants in Jasper for many years and was well-known for baking weddings cakes. She was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church in Jasper, the Ladies Sodality, and the St. Ann’s Society. She enjoyed cooking, her flower garden , her grandchildren, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and Indiana University basketball.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Mendel; one daughter, Pam Hildenbrand and husband Greg, Jasper; two sons, Tim Mendel and wife Tonya, and Keith Mendel and wife Shelley, all of Jasper; six grandchildren, Lauren and Austin Hildenbrand, and Cameron, Noah, Seth, and Kaitlynn Mendel; four brothers, Robert Burger Sr. and wife Virlee, Leo Giesler Jr., Ronald Giesler and wife Shirley, and Bill Giesler and wife Mary Jo, all of Ferdinand; three sisters, Shirley Lindauer, Ferdinand, Martha Oxley and husband, Donald, and Mary Denning, St. Meinrad; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The Precious Blood Ladies Sodality and St. Ann’s Society will pray a rosary at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Precious Blood Church followed by entombment in Fairview Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to Precious Blood Church, the Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, or to a favorite charity.
