Police Tried To Stop Him Before Collision

JASPER (NNDC) – One person was hurt in a two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon at Third and Newton Streets; an accident a Jasper police officer tried to prevent from happening.

Police say 19-year old Benjamin Sanders was southbound on Newton Street at about 2:45pm. Police say he was stopped behind another vehicle at a stop sign at the intersection with Third Street.

JPD says when the vehicle in front of Sanders proceeded into the intersection, Sanders followed it without yielding to traffic in both directions on Third Street and his car struck a westbound SUV.

Just before the collision, a JPD officer who was eastbound on Newton Street, says he anticipated the collision so he turned on his emergency lights in an attempt to stop Sanders from pulling out onto Newton Street.

The SUV was driven by 41-year old Domenic Bravo of Jasper. He complained of neck pain and was taken to Memorial Hospital by a personal vehicle.

Meanwhile, Sanders was cited for driving left of center and Bravo was cited for having expired license plates.
