James E. “Big Jim” Meyer, 87, Huntingburg

Big Jim MeyerJames E. “Big Jim” Meyer, 87, of Huntingburg, died Thursday (June 4) at his home. He was born in Ferdinand March 20, 1928, to Joseph and Bridget (Becher) Meyer. He married LaVerne A. Schmitt July 18, 1953. She died August 21, 2014.

Big Jim retired from the United States Postal Service where he was a rural mail carrier in Huntingburg for 30 years.  He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War and served as a combat medic during his tour of duty in Korea. He was also a full-time farmer, enjoyed spending time outdoors and on his farm. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg, V.F.W. Post No. 2366 in Huntingburg, and American Legion Post No. 124 in Ferdinand.

He is survived by seven sons, Joe Meyer and wife Lori, Shawnee, Kansas, Ed Meyer and wife Donna, Pat Meyer and wife Barb, and Bob Meyer and wife Eileen, all of Huntingburg, Art and Paul Meyer, both of Brownsburg, and Randy Meyer and wife Mary, Spring Hill, Kansas; three daughters, Mary Jo Fischer and husband Jack, and Cathy Tretter and husband Rich, all of Huntingburg, and Nancy Rahman, Fenton, Missouri; one sister, Clara Wuetcher, Diamond Bar, California; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Louis, Eugene, and Adolph Meyer, and one sister, Rita Oser.

Services at 10 a.m. (EDT) Monday at St. Mary’s Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the V.F.W. Post No. 2366 Memorial Detail and members of the American Legion Post No. 124. Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Sunday and from 9-4:40 a.m. Monday at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg.
