Huntingburg Man Seriously Injured In Sunday Morning ATV Accident

HUNTINGBURG (NNDC) – A Huntingburg man was seriously injured early Sunday in an ATV accident near the Patoka River.

Indiana conservation officers say 30-year old Lukas Schroeder was operating an ATV in a wooded area along the river at about 2:30am Sunday when he failed to negotiate the trail he was riding and hit a tree head on.

A passenger on the ATV called family members for help.

Conservation officers say Schroeder was taken to Memorial Hospital in Jasper with leg and head injuries. He was later lifeflighted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Officers say Schroeder was not wearing a helmet and alcohol may have been a contributing factor. The accident remains under investigation.

Indiana conservation officers say this accident should serve as a strong reminder to always use protective equipment such as chest protectors, helmets and shin guards when operating all-terrain vehicles.
