Kissling says the two easiest, least expensive and most effective way to prevent fires in the home is to check and regularly clean your dryer vent and make sure you have working smoke detectors.

According to research by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, 15,600 fires requiring fire department response start each year nationwide due to clothes dryer fires in residential homes resulting in an average of 16 deaths.
