Jasper Team Applies for America’s Best Communities Designation

JASPER (Office Of Mayor) – Jasper could soon be known officially as one of America’s Best Communities. A team of community leaders is entering Jasper in the America’s Best Communities contest, sponsored by Frontier Communications, DISH Network and CoBank.

The promotion provides a total of $10 million in prize money and support for growth and revitalization plans in small towns and cities across 27 states served by Frontier.

Citing the desire to begin the implementation of the Downtown + Riverfront Master Plan and jumpstart quality of place initiatives in the community,
Jasper leaders see this program as their opportunity to work together toward that goal.

“Every day we believe Jasper is among America’s best communities and this Frontier Communications event will enable us to compete for formal recognition”, said Jasper Mayor Terry Seitz. “We’ve assembled a great team representing public, private and charitable partners and our focus will be on projects within the Downtown Jasper and Riverfront area.”

The America’s Best Communities contest will help address the need for growth by identifying and investing in innovative ideas that small cities and towns can use to build and sustain their local economies. “I am so pleased to see that Jasper has applied for the contest,” said Marc Evans, Frontier’s Southern Indiana General Manager. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of innovative plan has been developed for local economic growth and community development. This is a great opportunity for the community to win up to $3 million for economic revitalization.”

The Jasper team includes members from the City Office of Community Development and Planning, Redevelop Old Jasper Action Coalition (ROJAC), Jasper Chamber of Commerce, Dubois Strong, Dubois County Community Foundation, and Vincennes University Jasper Campus. Five area businesses have also agreed to lend their support to the effort. They are: Kimball International, Finishing Touches, Matrix Integration, Jasper Engines & Transmissions and German American.

Jasper is among 18 Indiana cities that have registered for the America’s Best Communities title. Judges will then select up to 50 qualified applicants from the nationwide pool, each of which will be awarded $50,000 to develop their plans and proposals. Those communities will then have seven months to refine and submit their final proposals in September 2015.

Up to 15 semifinalists will be selected in November 2015 and will attend an America’s Best Communities summit in January 2016 to present their proposals. After the presentations, eight finalists will be selected, and each will be awarded $100,000 to implement their plans. The top three contestants will be awarded a total of $6 million in grand prizes in October 2017.

“This contest is designed to challenge a community’s brightest and most innovative thinkers to develop meaningful strategies and plans that will transform their town or city,” Frontier Communications Chairman and CEO Maggie Wilderotter said. “Whether ideas come from an individual or a group, visionaries in a community can effect powerful transformations. We’re excited to see which ideas rise to the top and how they will help not only an applicant’s local community grow and thrive, but how the proposals can benefit all communities across America.”
