Alvina L. Schnell, 89, Jasper

Alvina Schnell editedAlvina L. Schnell, 89, of Jasper, died Monday (March 23) at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper, Indiana. She was born in Celestine August 13, 1925, to Bernard and Katherine (Fischer) Gadlage. She married Kenneth M. Schnell May 6, 1947, at St. Celestine Catholic Church. He died November 17, 2006.

Alvina retired from Aristokraft, where she worked for many years. She was a member of St. Celestine Church, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the St. Celestine’s St. Ann’s Society, and a member of the V.F.W. Auxillary. Alvina enjoyed crocheting, quilting, gardening, canning, and baking.

She is survived by six daughters, Imelda “Mel” Oeding and husband Mike, Velpen, Kathy Knust and husband Ed, Schnellville, Ruth Gehlhausen and husband, Tom, and Peggy Merkel and husband Greg, all of Jasper, and Karen Kuper and husband, Steven, and Nancy Schroering and husband, Emil, all of Celestine; two sons, Stephen Schnell and wife Cindy, Celestine, and Keith Schnell and wife, Cyndi, Louisville, Kentucky; 23 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Minnie Nordhoff, Ella Fritz, Veronica Hoffman, Gertrude Gehlhausen, Clara Schulz, and Etta Marie Klem, three brothers, Herman and Roman Gadlage, and Ralph Gadlage, who died in infancy, and one granddaughter, Audrey Knust.

Services at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Celestine Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. St. Celestine and St. Joseph parishes will pray a rosary at 1:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Celestine Church, St. Joseph’s Church, the Alzheimer’s Association, or to a favorite charity.
