FFFLogo200-e1395252971286FERDINAND (Local Sources) – The Ferdinand Folk Festival is launching its first singer-songwriter contest—the overall winner of which will earn a 30-minute spot on the Folk Fest’s Main Stage on Saturday, September 19, 2015. Additionally, the winner will get billing on www.ferdinandfolkfestival.com, as well as on official Folk Festival merchandise.

“The hope is to give regional people of all ages a unique incentive to create new, vibrant music in the genres supported by the Ferdinand Folk Festival—folk, American, bluegrass, blues, reggae, country, etc.,” said Rock Emmert, Ferdinand Folk Festival committee member. “We think that this could also provide inspiration for people to get involved in the arts movement in our county.”

Designed to encourage youth as well as the young at heart to explore and discover the rich diversity of music genres, the contest is the first of its kind in Dubois County, as well as in this region of the state of Indiana. The Ferdinand Folk Festival’s songwriter contest will culminate with a juried performance later this summer and is being co-chaired by Emmert and Forest Park Jr./Sr. High School’s music and theater teacher Chuck Bradley.

There will be two divisions: high school seniors and younger and high school graduates and older. The first 40 entrants will be kept for consideration, with each entry consisting of no more than three songs that cannot be more than five minutes in length each—electronic submissions are encouraged. Songs that have been previously recorded and released under contract on a label are not eligible. Submissions can be emailed to info@ferdinandfolkfestival.com and are due by June 1. Finalists will be announced by July 1, and a final, public showcase competition will be held on Saturday, August 8. At the showcase, a winner of each division will be selected, as well as the overall winner. The competition’s overall winner will be awarded the Main Stage slot at the sixth annual Ferdinand Folk Festival on Saturday, September 19, 2015, and the runner-up for the evening will be offered a slot on the Market Stage.

All entries will be subjected to an independent and private screening by several experienced music promoters, songwriters, and educators familiar with original songwriting and performing techniques using the following rubric: originality of lyrics (25%), melody (25%), musicianship (25%), and overall quality (25%).
