Huntingburg Woman Arrested After Confessing To Burglary; Residential Entry (BLOTTER)

HUNTINGBURG (NNDC) – A local woman was arrested this morning charged with illegally entering a neighbor’s apartment late last month.

Huntingburg police say back on February 24th officers were called to a report of a theft and residential entry at an apartment in the 500 block of Pleasant View Drive.

There 66-year old Nancy Griffin told police told police she came home that afternoon and saw a neighbor she knew coming out her front door of her (Griffin’s) apartment.

Griffin told police the neighbor was 46-year old Tara Kaye Payne, who also lives in the 500 block of Pleasant View Drive.

Griffin says she approached Payne. Griffin says Payne said she was looking for Griffin and thought she was home.

Griffin says after a short conversation between the two, Payne left.

Griffin says once inside her apartment, she noticed that some of her prescription medication was missing. She then called the police.

This morning, HPD detective Sgt. Christian Gogle says he met with Tara Payne at the Huntingburg Police station to talk with her further about the incident. Gogel says Payne confessed to going into Nancy Griffin’s apartment without her permission and while inside, took some of Mrs. Griffin’s prescription medication.

Payne is charged with Burglary (Level 5 Felony) and Residential Entry (Level 6 Felony). She was then lodged into the Dubois Co. Security Center and is being held on a $1000.00 cash only bond.

Driver Not Hurt When Truck Crashes Into Brick Covered Mailbox

JASPER (NNDC) – A Jasper man escaped Injury Early Friday morning when the SUV he was driving struck a brick mailbox.

35-year old Vernon Bittner told police his attention was diverted when he struck the mailbox in the 300 block of North St. Charles Street south of Indiana 56 shortly before 6am.

Bittner told JPD officers he was lighting a cigarette and his vehicle went left of center. He says his southbound SUV hit the mailbox when he overcorrected back to the right.

Damage estimates to the mailbox about $5000. JPD says Bittner’s vehicle was a total loss.

Merrillville Woman Arrested On Drug-Related Charges After Being Pulled Over For Speeding

HUNTINGBURG (NNDC) – A 23-year old Lucretia Collins Black of Merrillville faces drug charges in Dubois County after a traffic stop along U. S. 231 in Huntingburg Thursdsay.

HPD officers pulled over Black’s car for speeding near the intersection with 14th Street shortly before 1pm. during the stop, HPD says officers located marijuana and various pieces of paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Black is charged with possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.

Jasper Man Arrested; Charged With O.W.I. Again

JPD says 53-year old Jeffery Scott was arrested after the minivan he was driving nearly several parked cars along Jackson Street Thursday night.

A JPD officer says he saw Scott’s van swerving as it traveled southbound on the narrow street at about 7:40pm.

JPD says Scott also failed signal when he turned the vehicle east onto 13th Street. The officer also says neither Scott nor a passenger in the van with him were wearing seatbelts.

A field sobriety tested Scott’s blood alcohol content at .27%. Later, a chemical test at Memorial Hospital resulted in Scott’s B.A.C. at .32% (four times the legal limit to drive in Indiana. JPD says marijuana was also found in his system.

Scott has been charged with Operating While Intoxicated with a prior conviction within the past five years. He’s also been charged with endangerment.
