Grant Welp Signs Contract To Play Pro Football In Europe (with VIDEO)

FRANKLIN (Franklin College) – Franklin College senior Grant Welp (Ferdinand, Ind./Forest Park) has joined three 2013 graduates in gaining international professional football contracts, joining the Orebro Black Knights in Sweden for the upcoming season.

Former players Jonny West, Kyle Linville, and Colin Gallagher signed professional contracts in February with the Franken Knights of the German Football League.

Welp had a strong senior season at quarterback in 2014, leading the Grizzlies to an 8-3 record and the program’s fifth consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. He was named the league’s Offensive Most Valuable Player for the fall campaign after throwing for 3,127 yards and 31 touchdowns, while completing 67.9 percent of his passes. Welp also rushed for 366 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns.

“I am blessed to have the opportunity to continue my football career overseas,” said Welp. “There are many people and coaches that have supported me, and helped me achieve the professional level. I have been blessed that everyone has had the confidence in my ability to perform at a high level.”

Welp also stated: “Playing in Franklin College’s offensive system, with Head Coach Mike Leonard and the quality coaches, has provided excellent background. Learning the X’s and O’s of the game from these excellent coaches was mentally draining at times, but has definitely paid dividends, making my dreams a reality. They have also inspired my development off the playing field.”
