Duff Man Arrested For Stealing More Than 50 Used Batteries A Week After Allegedly Stealing Trailer

DUFF (NNDC) – A Dubois County man was arrested Saturday morning charged with stealing more than 50 used batteries from a Jasper business.

The arrest on Saturday comes eight days after 24-year old Casey Mehringer of Duff was first arrested for allegedly stealing a trailer from Sternberg Chrysler Center on Jasper’s far southside.

Mehringer was arrested this past Saturday by Indiana State Police on behalf of Jasper police on a warrant out of Dubois Superior Court.  He was arrested for allegedly taking 55 batteries from Hopf Outdoor Equipment in Jasper.

JPD detective Sgt. Rick Chambers says the batteries were taken from Hopf in the early morning hours of February 9th.  They were discovered missing several days later.

Chambers says JPD obtained surveillance video from Hopf and police recognized the truck used in the Hopf theft as being Mehringer’s, and the trailer used as being the one that was stolen from Sternberg.  Chambers believes the trailer was stolen from Sternberg just hours prior to the Hopf theft.

Casey Mehringer was arrested February 20th at his home near Duff for the Sternberg trailer theft.  The trailer was located at Mehringer’s home.

JPD obtained the Hopf surveillance video the next day (February 21st).

Chambers says the stolen batteries from the Hopf theft were scrapped at Junk It Recycling west of Ireland for about $290.  All the batteries were used; most of them, about 40 were for all-terrain vehicles.

Mehringer ischarged with a Level 6 felony count of theft for the battery heist.
