Helen Virginia Abell, 91, Birdseye

Helen AbellHelen Virginia Abell, 91, of Birdseye, died Thursday (January 22) at her home. She was born in Mentor December 5, 1923, to Vernie and Rosella Ida (Crawford) Pfaff. She married Forrest L. Abell October 6, 1945, in English. He died January 23, 2012.

Helen retired from the Purdue Extension Food Service Program where she worked as a food nutritionist. She was a member of Birdseye Christian Church, a charter member of the Birdseye Order of the Eastern Star No. 590, VFW Post No. 2366 auxiliary in Huntingburg, and D.A.V. auxiliary in Jasper.

She is survived by two daughters, Ava Gehlhausen and husband Rick, Ferdinand, and Ann L. Deel and husband Michael, Birdseye; five grandchildren, Ryan and Kyla Gehlhausen, Adam and Jenna Deel, and Alicia Harmon; and six great-grandchildren, Rayna and Rylynn Gehlhausen, Aiden and Abel Klem, Hunter Chappell, and Jaxon Deel.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Farrel and Gene Pfaff, and one great-grandchild, Caleb Deel.

Services at 1 p.m. (EST) Monday at the Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial following in Mentor Cemetery near Birdseye. Pastor Ron Hickman will officiate. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to the Order of the Eastern Star No. 590.
