Birdseye Scooter Operator Now Charged; Ireland Child Feared Missing Is Found (BLOTTER)

BIRDSEYE (NNDC) – A Birdseye man has been formally charged in connection with a scooter accident this past October.

24-year old Zachary Russell is now facing a Level 6 felony count of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Bodily Injury after he ran his scooter into an SUV. The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department says Russell’s blood alcohol content was .09% the evening of October 21, 2014.

DCSD says Russell was westbound on Indiana 64 in Birdseye when he attempted to turn south onto Indiana 145. DCSD says when Russell made the turn he pulled in front of the oncoming eastbound SUV and the SUV struck the scooter.

Russell was thrown from the scooter. He suffered leg and head injuries according to DCSD. He was flown from the scene by LifeFlight to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville.

The driver of the SUV, 25-year old Clarissa Neal of Marengo, told DCSD she saw the scooter make the turn and attempted to avoid it but could not.

Neal was transported to Memorial Hospital in Jasper complaining of chest pains. She was later taken to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.

Neal told police she saw the scooter turn into her path on State Road 64 and attempted to avoid striking it but was unable to do so. The Ford’s front passenger side struck the scooter and on impact Russell was thrown from the scooter.

Russell was taken into custody at his home by DCSD deputies Wednesday afternoon.
