LeRoy J. Schnarr, 86, Jasper

Leroy SchnarrLeRoy J. Schnarr, 86, of Jasper, died Wednesday (January 21) at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. He was born April 12, 1928, in Boone Township to Orville and Dora (Hoffman) Schnarr. He married Iona E. Neukam April 20, 1950, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Haysville. She died May 19, 2014.

LeRoy was a lifetime farmer in the Boone Township area. He also worked part time for Uebelhor and Sons automobile dealership and Kimball International. He also managed and was part owner of Westwood Apartments. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Boone Township, serving on the church council and singing in the choir. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 673, American Legion Post No. 147, and the Ireland Sportsman’s Club. He served as a Democratic precinct committeeman, was a member of Dubois County Civil Defense, and a member of the Memorial Hospital board of directors. He enjoyed singing, collecting coins and stamps, working on puzzles, playing cards, square dancing, and watching sports.

He is survived by one daughter-in-law, Joann Schnarr, Boone Township; two grandsons, Doug Schnarr and wife Kiley, Clayton, and Dr. Chad Schnarr and wife Janet, Hillsboro, Tennessee; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Michael D. Schnarr, one brother, James E. Schnarr, and one sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Fuhrman.

Services at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Pastor Catherine Burnette will officiate. VFW Post No. 673 will conduct military gravesite rites. Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Friday at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Church or to a favorite charity.
