Othmar “Ots” Mehling, 90, Huntingburg

Ots MehlingOthmar “Ots” Mehling, 90, of Huntingburg, died Monday (January 19) at The Waters of Huntingburg nursing center in Huntingburg. He was born in Ferdinand August 6, 1924, to John and Gertrude (Seger) Mehling. He married Donna J. Birk November 28, 1953, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg.

Ots was a retired furniture factory machinist. For many years he was a semi-professional baseball pitcher and went by the nickname of “Oats” when he played baseball locally. One of his biggest claims to fame was the time he struck out 21 consecutive batters in an exhibition game while pitching for the Jasper Reds. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Huntingburg and the Huntingburg Y.M.I. Club.

He is survived by his wife, Donna J. Mehling.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Romus and Cyril Mehling, and three sisters, Mildred Fleig, Clarissa Fischer, and Estelle Wahl.

Services at 10 a.m. (EST) Saturday at St. Mary’s Church.  Internment of his cremains during a committal service at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Father Ryan Hilderbrand will officiate at the funeral mass. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday and from 9-9:45 a.m. Saturday at Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg. A parish rosary, followed by a Y.M.I. memorial service, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to St. Mary’s Church or to a favorite charity.
