Jasper To Become Indiana’s First “Giga City!” (VIDEO)

JASPER (NNDC) – Jasper mayor Terry Seitz this morning announced the city has entered into an agreement with Elletsville-based Smithville Telecom to install fiber-optic lines throughout the city.

When completed in about three years, Jasper residents will have access to a full gigabit of fiber optic for internet and wireless services.

How fast is a gigabit? Jasper utilities general manager Bud Hauersperger says now it takes people about 20 minutes to download a movie on services such as NetFlix. A gigabit will allow people to download that same movie in about a minute!

Meanwhile, Seitz says Jasper will be the first city in Indiana to have one gigabit internet and wireless services available to residential customers from Smithville.

The formal announcement was made during a news conference this morning at city hall.  NewsNow Dubois County broadcast the announcement “live” to our audience.

Currently, Ferdinand does have fiber optic internet and wireless service available to its residents.

Smithville plans to approach Huntingburg soon about the gigabite service.

NewsNow Dubois County is currently working on an expanded story on today’s announcement.  In the meantime you can watch this morning’s news conference in its entirety.  You do so below…
