Roman G. Kiefer, 89, Ferdinand

Roman KieferRoman G. Kiefer, 89, of Ferdinand, died Tuesday (January 6) at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper.He was born in Jasper July 21,1925, to Robert and Martina (Burger) Kiefer. He married Cecelia Meyer July 1,1950, at St. Meinrad Archabbey church. She died January 6, 2013.

Roman retired from the U.S. Navy after serving 30 years. He served on the USS Princeton during World War II and was aboard when the ship was sunk. He was a member of St. Meinrad Legion Post No. 366 and Jasper V.F. W. Post No. 673, and a member of Fleet Reserve of Owensboro. He enjoyed fixing electrical appliances and sharpening.

He is survived by one son, Terry L. Kiefer and wife Stella, Lawrenceville, Illinois; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Kiefer, Jasper; one brother, Otto Kiefer, Holland; and his caregivers, Betty Kirkhoff and husband John, Evanston.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Randy Kiefer, two sisters, Annie Siefrig and Rosalyn Schmitt, and five brothers, George, John, Hugo, Robert, and Ambrose Kiefer.

Services at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Meinrad Catholic Church. Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Friday at the church. Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand is in charge of arrangements.
