Velma O. Grundhoefer, 97, Mariah Hill

Velma GrundhoeferVelma O. Grundhoefer, 97, of Mariah Hill, died Wednesday (December 31) at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. She was born January 23, 1917, in Mariah Hill to Simon and Philomena (Seufert) Nord. She married Raymond Grundhoefer November 25, 1937, in Mary Help of Christians Church in Mariah Hill. He died June 28, 1980.

Velma was a member of Mary Help of Christians Parish and its Ladies Sodality. She was a homemaker and received the honorary Brute’ Award in 2006. She was a member of the Mariah Hill Conservation Club and was chairperson of the Mary Help of Christians Picnic Turtle Soup Committee. She was a former Spencer County Democrat Precinct committeewoman, enjoyed playing cards, butchering, attending sporting activities, and working outdoors.

Surviving are four daughters, Shirley Boeckman, Santa Claus, Kathleen Kemper and husband Jim, Sandra Hagedorn, and Ruth Burger all of Ferdinand; two sons, Ronald Grundhoefer and wife Joan, Newburgh, and Kenneth Grundhoefer and wife Esther, Evansville; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Sylvester Nord and wife Alice, Ferdinand; and one sister, Vernita “Nita” Lueken, Ferdinand.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three brothers, Emil, Francis “Bencie”, and Jim Nord, three sisters, Loretta Nord, Edna Roll, and Bernice Smith, and two great-grandchildren, Jonah Rickelman and Abram Burger.

Services at 10 a.m. (CDT) Monday at Mary Help of Christians Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand and from 9-10 a.m. Monday at the church. Online condolences may be made at
