Lawrence J. “Larry” Backer, 77, Jasper

Larry BackerLawrence J. “Larry” Backer, 77, of Jasper, died Monday at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper. He was born September 9, 1937, in Evansville to Dr. Henry G. and Frances (McLaughlin) Backer. He married Mary Ellen Schneider August 21, 1965, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper.

Larry retired after 32 years as a teacher of chemistry, biology and math at Holland and Southridge high schools. He was a member of St. Joseph Church and Ferdinand American Legion Post No. 124. He was a member of the first graduating class of St. Ferdinand High School, where he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. He enjoyed playing sheepshead, gardening, hunting, fishing, reading, traveling, and spending time with his friends, family, and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Backer; one son, Steven Backer and wife Marcella, Jasper; three daughters, Dr. Emily Backer and husband Dr. Timothy Gatewood, Kokomo, and Clare Bies and Elizabeth Bcker, both of Jasper; eight grandchildren, Ellen, Christopher, and Tristan Backer; Thomas and Grace Gatewood, Ingrid and Samuel Bies, and Hayden Biggs; three sisters, Sister Phyllis Backer, Medical Missionary Sisters, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mary Jo Uebelhor, Jasper, and Margaret Backer, Ferdinand; four brothers, Dr. George (Pete) Backer and wife Dr. Barbara Backer, LaPorte, Henry (Hank) Backer, Ferdinand, Thomas Backer and wife Pam, Erlanger, Kentucky, and Dr. Joseph Backer and wife Lucia, McLean, Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Susan Hasenour, and three brothers, John, David and Patrick Backer.

Services at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church in Jasper. Burial will be held at a later date. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper.
