Sr. Mary Roman Dall, OSB, 80, Ferdinand

Sr. Mary RomanSister Mary Roman Dall, 80, of the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand, died Friday (November 14) at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper. A native of Ferdinand, Sister Mary Roman was born March 5, 1934, the fifth of 11 children born to Anton and Johanna (Verkamp) Dall.

She entered the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand in 1950 and made her profession of monastic vows in 1952. For almost 50 years Sister Mary Roman ministered in education as a teacher, principal, reading consultant, and tutor. She taught at schools in Indianapolis, Evansville (Holy Redeemer and Holy Rosary, where she served as principal), Boonville, St. Anthony, St. Thomas, Vincennes, Rockport, and Ferdinand Elementary. She served as reading consultant for Southeast Dubois School Corporation, and was administrative clerical assistant and more recently assisted the monastery coordinator and tutored students.

She is survived by two sisters, Catherine Wendholt, Jasper, and Mildred Hoffmann and husband James, McAllen, Texas; three brothers, Arthur and Rita, Jasper, Robert and wife Marie and Norbert and wife Carol, all of Ferdinand; nieces and nephews; and members of her religious community.

She was preceded in death by her parents and five sisters, Rose Mary Kersteins, Alberta Dall, Clara Mae Hackman, Rita Ann Dall, and Irma Jean Lujan.

Visitation from 2-7 p.m. Monday and 2-4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the monastery. A wake service at 7 p.m. Monday. The funeral Mass at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the monastery church with burial to follow. Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand.
